Week 3

Multimodality, a topic I am much more comfortable with! Especially compared to last week. This is probably because I am a music student and love aural modes and its corresponding mediums. It's not really the same thing though is it? I have always been aware of the 5 modes, however, never known much about most of them, at least in-depth.  I know more about aural, linguist and visual than spatial and gestural and I'm looking forward to learning more. (Kristen Arola, Jennifer Shepherd, and Cheryl Ball, Writer/Designer, 4) What is multimodality, you ask? Well according to the Victorian Department of Education and Training [DET] (2019), multimodality is when meaning, messages or any form of communication is conveyed through a combination of more than one mode. This is where those 5 modes come in. Then we move onto mediums. What is a medium? The medium is basically the channel in which the communication is conveyed. Week 2

This weeks topic of archives and databases was initially a topic I had no interest in and was dreading due to my lack of knowledge on the topic. When I think of the idea of databases my mind instantly thinks of IT and things that I do not naturally understand. ( Photo by  Markus Spiske  on  Unsplash ) However, from the material this week I am starting to see how it is much more than that and how it can be something I might understand after all. This week's reading of Lev Manovich's (1998) Database as a Symbolic Form explains this when saying that no matter how new media presents itself, whether it be interactive narratives, linear narratives etc, they are all databases. These databases are the basis of all forms of digital art. The material this week specifically touched on Installation and what it entails and the concept that you can emerge yourse...

Week 1 Reflection and Response

Art is such a vague term as in today's day and age there are so many different forms. In this new digital age, art now can take its shape in even more forms, not only including films and photographs but also creating memes and transforming traditionally known art into something completely different. Walter Benjamin's The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction looks at, and discusses how those traditional art forms have been shaped and transitioned into newer forms through technology. He mentions how art has always been able to be reproduced (Benjamin, 1969) which is evident even more so nowadays. There are more options than ever with the introduction of digital media. Anything can be transformed with a click of a button. However, with this comes significant change. These newer technologies can sometimes replace older art forms. For example, Benjamin (1969) talks about how Lithography was revolutionary during its time as it "enabled graphic art to illustrate ever...
