What does it take to become a published author nowadays? Well with self-publishing being an option now, not as much as it used to. Yes there is no guarantee that your published work will actually become successful, but at least you can say you're a published author? But who am I to say any of this. Everyone has their own opinion on whether to self-publish or not and I'm going to be honest, I don't have a strong enough opinion to even share mine. I like reading work, regardless of how it was published. If it's good, you'll probably catch me reading it. But how do you find a good book or piece of work to read? Sure, you can just go to a book store, or browse the internet for someone that stands out to you. But the most successful stories are the ones that are marketed well. Branding is everything. Without sufficient branding and marketing, how will the word spread? Well that is why we have author platforms! Having a platform is important in any industry, the sp...

Empathy games. A genre I honestly didn't know existed until now. What is it? Well it's your standard game where you are the controller and have agency, however, rather than playing to win or complete something, you play to evoke emotions and make choices drawing from your own experiences when faced with a difficult circumstance. These types of games attempt to put the player in the characters shoes in order to make these decisions. To put it simply, use empathy while playing when making your decisions and play using your own emotions, feelings and experiences. Now I decided to take some time to play Zoe Quinn, Patrick Lindsey and Isaac Schankler's Depression Quest   "an interactive (non) fiction about living with depression" and it is exactly as described. (Screenshot taken from  http://www.depressionquest.com/dqfinal.html# ) This game took me on a journey. In the beginning I couldn't find myself interested or connected at all as I made my way throug...

I f you close your eyes and just listen to the world around you in this very moment, what would you hear? When I say listen I mean really listen.  ( Photo by  maxime caron  on  Unsplash ) Me? If I were listening superficially, I'd tell you I hear nothing, as I sit in my room by myself writing this post. But if I really listen, I can hear the light hum of my laptop, so light it almost doesn't exist and the clacking of the keys on my keyboard. I hear my sister in the living room who occasionally plays her game or watches a video too loud. I can even hear my neighbours and their light chatter as they do most night. If I listen even more than that, I can very faintly hear the sound of some cars driving on the wet roads, and the light rustle of the trees. All of this from simply listening. And this isn't even a big night, if I were writing this on a Friday or Saturday night out of isolation, I can almost guarantee my neighbours would be playing their music stupidl...

Week 7

Honestly, when I first heard the word 'Automediality' nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, came to my mind. I had genuinely never heard of it. It also sounded really complicated but I'm glad to report it really isn't. We've all had something or other to do with automediality. If you use any form of social media then you definitely have. Nowadays we put our whole lives online. Got a new job? Better update facebook. New outfit? Definitely an instagram post. Annoyed at someone or something? Twitter would love to know all about it. We post, blog or tweet anything and sometimes everything. Automediality demonstrates the process, rather than a completed product. You could compare it to an autobiography, which is a complete work of someones life, at least the aspects of their life that they want and are willing to share. Whereas, automediality is the process of interacting, living, adapting and presenting in the digital space, which remains ongoing (Rak, 2015).  Soc...

This week we are going to delve even deeper into electronic literature. I discussed it a little in the last post, however, we only really touched the surface. I am glad I did though because it helped my understanding on the topic as well as helped my ability to create my Twine game for our second remediation.  Last time the focus was placed upon hypertext. So my aim this time is to use that and go into more depth regarding electronic literature in general. We have already discussed what electronic literature or e-literature is, that is works of literature that use and take advantage of the abilities of a digital platform, often developed/made for these platforms.  These works that use hypertext are often referred to as 'Hypermedia' which is short for hypertext media. Other forms of media include 'Multimedia' which involves using a combination of different things like audio, images, text, videos and even interactive content. Then there is 'Interactive media',...

Week 5

T aking advantage of the much needed break from last week, we have 2 topics of discussion today. So with that, let us begin with electronic literature. Everyone, at some point or another, has had some experience with electronic literature whether they know it or not. To put it simple, electronic literature is work created exclusively for digital devices on digital devices. This type of literature is basically online available on these devices due to the ways in which it was developed/coded specific for the digital platform, making it difficult and sometimes even impossible to print, since not everything is transferable.  If we delve deeper, talking about hypertext in particular, you will be able to understand how such things are made for digital devices.  What is hypertext? Well  this  is hypertext to put it simply. By clicking on the linking word, you will be directed to more information. Often used with relating words, you would click highlighted/linked word, f...

Multimodality, a topic I am much more comfortable with! Especially compared to last week. This is probably because I am a music student and love aural modes and its corresponding mediums. It's not really the same thing though is it? I have always been aware of the 5 modes, however, never known much about most of them, at least in-depth.  I know more about aural, linguist and visual than spatial and gestural and I'm looking forward to learning more. (Kristen Arola, Jennifer Shepherd, and Cheryl Ball, Writer/Designer, 4) What is multimodality, you ask? Well according to the Victorian Department of Education and Training [DET] (2019), multimodality is when meaning, messages or any form of communication is conveyed through a combination of more than one mode. This is where those 5 modes come in. Then we move onto mediums. What is a medium? The medium is basically the channel in which the communication is conveyed. For example: if one were to choose to communication thr...
